In 1967 he graduated with honors from the Geological Faculty of Lomonosov Moscow State University with a degree in "Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology" (specialization — permafrost studies). In 1970 he completed postgraduate studies and defended his PhD thesis at Moscow State University. A student of Professor V.A. Kudryavtsev.

Doctor of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences (1990, dissertation defended at the Institute of the Earth's Crust, Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences, Irkutsk), Professor. He held honorary titles: Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation, Honorary Transport Builder.

Main career stages

  • 1965–1977 — work in Moscow State University expeditions: from senior collector to expedition leader. In 1974–1977 — head of the famous Dudinka expedition of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University.
  • 1977–1986 — Associate Professor, founder and first head of the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology at Chita Polytechnic Institute (organized the department in 1978).
  • 1986–2005 — work at Mosgiprotrans (Transport Construction Design and Survey Institute): chief specialist, then chief project engineer. Supervised engineering-geocryological surveys for the Baikal-Amur Mainline (BAM) and the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline (AYaM).
  • Since 1991 — Scientific Director of the research and production enterprise "TransIGEM" (TransEGEM) in Moscow.
  • 1995–2018 — Professor at the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology, Chita State University / Transbaikal State University.
  • Since 2003 — Scientific Director of CJSC "Center for Practical Ecology - Ecoterra" and technical specialist at PENOPLEX Spb LLC.
  • 2008–2018 — Deputy Director for Science at CJSC "Akva-T".

Contribution to Chita Polytechnic Institute

In 1978, Valentin Georgievich founded the Department of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology at Chita Polytechnic Institute (now Transbaikal State University) and headed it until 1986. He created and repeatedly taught courses: "Introduction to the Specialty", "General Permafrost Science", "Methods of Permafrost Research", "Engineering Geology", "Quaternary Geology", "Ecological Geology". Under his leadership, the first scientific expeditions to the north of the Chita region were organized, and the scientific-teaching and engineering-research staff of the department was formed. From 1995 until the end of his life, he continued to work as a professor at the same department, passing on experience to new generations of students and postgraduates.

Scientific works and inventions

Author of more than 370 scientific works, including 15 monographs (two of them translated into Chinese and published in China), 5 scientific collections edited by him. He held 14 patents for inventions. His works have been published in Russia, the USA, Norway, Canada, China, Mongolia, and South Korea.

Patents by Valentin Georgievich cover a wide range of engineering solutions in construction on permafrost: methods for stabilizing roadbed foundations on icy soils, devices for thermal stabilization of soils (including seasonal cooling devices), methods of icings protection, structures for strengthening contact network supports and pipelines. Many of these developments were implemented during the construction and operation of BAM, AYaM, the "Amur" federal highway Chita–Khabarovsk, as well as at gas pipeline facilities in the Arctic.

Key works include:

  • "Geocryological research at gas pipeline crossings through river valleys" (Novosibirsk: Nauka, 1988)
  • "Concept of a monitoring system for hazardous icings processes in the Chita region" (Chita, 2000)
  • "Active methods of strengthening roadbed foundations on permafrost soils" (Chita, 2001)
  • "Stabilization of roadbed and contact network supports on permafrost soils" (Chita: ChitSU, 2005)
  • "Geocryological monitoring of pipelines". Permafrost. Fourth Int. Conf. Proc. Washington, D.C., 1983
  • "Concept of an engineering-geological monitoring system for the 'Amur' highway Chita–Khabarovsk" (co-author Soboleva S.V.). – Chita: Zabtrans, 2010.
Key achievements • Participation in the study of the first Arctic gas pipeline Messoyakha–Norilsk (1968–1977), proposed measures to prevent accidents.
• Development of the concept of permafrost protection for the roadbed of BAM, the Amur-Yakutsk Mainline (AYaM) and the "Amur" federal highway Chita–Khabarovsk, organization of their monitoring (1986–1993 and beyond).
• Scientific supervision of surveys on the Bamovskaya–Tynda–Berkakit, Tynda–Urgal, Berkakit–Tommot–Yakutsk lines.
• Repeated (1995–2017) consulting on projects on the Tibetan Plateau (China) at the invitation of the Ministry of Railways of China and the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as well as in Alaska (1992–2009).
• Supervision of works on icings protection of facilities in the Transbaikal region (since 1999).
• Full member of three international academies: of Mineral Resources, of Ecology and Life Protection Sciences, of Cold.
• Member of the editorial board of the journal "Road Power", member of three doctoral dissertation councils.
• Under his supervision, 4 postgraduates defended their theses, another 7 worked on PhD dissertations.

Recognition and awards

Valentin Georgievich's scientific, pedagogical and engineering activities were marked by high state and professional awards:

  • "Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation" — for outstanding achievements in the development of scientific fields, creation of scientific schools, and training of specialists.
  • "Honored Worker of Higher Education of the Russian Federation" — for success in organizing the educational process, long-term work in higher education.
  • "Honorary Transport Builder" — for special services in the development of the transport industry, implementation of advanced solutions in the construction of BAM, AYaM, gas pipelines.

In addition, V.G. Kondratiev was awarded the medal "For Services to the Chita Region", was a full member of three international academies, a member of the editorial board of the journal "Road Power". Publications about him appeared in the journal "Transport Construction", the books "Geocryology at Moscow University", "Professors of Chita State University", "Encyclopedia of Transbaikalia" and others.

Worthy of memory, a memorial plaque or monument in his small homeland — an example for thinking youth choosing the path to a great life.
